Places reached through 11-year academic society collaboration activities

Takada, Tsuyoshi

Nihon Jishin Kogakkai-Shi, (44), p.6 - 11, 2021/10

This report describes the status of nuclear seismic safety assurance in Japan before 2007, followed by the background and main achievements of the activities of the three research committees in collaboration with the Japan Association for Earthquake Engineering (JAEE) and the Atomic Energy Society of Japan (AESJ), and finally a summary of the points that the author considers important as the end of these activities.

A Statistical analysis of the relationship between days earthquake in Japan and its vicinity and beryllium-7 concentrations in the surface air at Takasaki

Ichihashi, Masaki

Jishin, 64(2), p.23 - 32, 2011/08

Earthquake-days in and near Japan and the Be-7 concentrations in surface air at Takasaki were statistically analyzed. A day when one or more earthquakes of M5 or greater occur in and near Japan was defined as "earthquake-day". The aftershocks were not included in the analysis. The residuals obtained by deducting the 31 moving averages from the Be-7 concentrations were analyzed. There was a significant difference between the resisuals on earthquake-days and those on non-earthquake-days. This shows that the Be-7 decreases more from the 31 moving averages on earthquake-days than on non-earthquake-days. This result suggests that there is a physical relationship between earthquakes and atmospheric environment. There was also a significant difference between the resisuals on earthquake-days with deep focal depths and those on non-earthquake-days.

Source fault of the Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku Earthquake in 2008 estimated by distribution of heights of fluvial terraces

Tajikara, Masayoshi; Ikeda, Yasutaka*; Nohara, Tsuyoshi

Jishin, 62(1), p.1 - 11, 2009/08

We estimated distribution of uplift rates during the last 150 kyrs around the focal region of the Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku Earthquake in 2008 (occurred at June 14, 2008; Mj 7.2, Mw 6.9), based on relative heights of fluvial/marine terraces. Active fault has not been mapped around this area, because clear fault scarp with large displacement does not exist. We showed that the uplift rates vary around the focal region and that the variation of uplift rates is related to the activities of the source fault of the Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku Earthquake in 2008. We estimated the vertical displacement rate of this fault as 0.4-0.5 mm/yr, based on difference of uplift rates on the both side of the source fault. We considered that the existence of (blind) active fault can be estimated even in the area with no clear fault scarp, by clarifying the distribution of uplift rates based on heights of fluvial/marine terraces.

Ainu oral traditions and historical records on earthquakes in Hokkaido, Japan

Niizato, Tadafumi; Shigeno, Kiyoyuki*; Takashimizu, Yasuhiro*

Rekishi Jishin, (21), p.121 - 136, 2006/00

In this paper, Ainu oral traditions and historical records on earthquake events in the Ainu Cultural period were investigated, and the reliability of occurrence of the past earthquake events happened in Hokkaido was examined. As a result of investigation, 28 oral traditions and historical records were collected from the Ainu-related literatures. Based on the examination, we interpreted 24 traditions and records as results of ancient earthquakes, and the others were not related to earthquakes. The inferred areas hit by earthquakes in the Ainu Cultural and its before period were mainly distributed around the Pacific coastal area of Hokkaido. It may be presumed that future distribution of earthquake will be same as present-day distribution for a same future period of Ainu Cultural period on the basis of distribution of the past to present earthquake.

Focusing on the cover layer materials (as the Radon Barrier Materials), which could have the effect to restrain the radon from scattering into the air and the effect of the radiation shielding, we produced the radon barrier materials with crude bentonite on an experimental basis, using the rotary type comprehensive unit for grinding and mixing, through which we carried out the evaluation of the characteristics thereof.

Status on seismic design and verification for ITER in Japan

Takeda, Nobukazu; Nakahira, Masataka; Tada, Eisuke; Fujita, Satoshi*; Fujita, Takafumi*

Nihon Jishin Kogakkai Rombunshu (Internet), 4(3), p.298 - 304, 2004/04

ITER is a Tokamak-type international fusion experimental device composed of superconducting magnets, a vacuum vessel, and so on. These are operated at a quie wide temperature ranging from 4K to 200 degree C. For this, multiple plates have been chosen as the machine support so as to peovide flexibility in the radial direction while keeping high rigidity vertically. This results in a low natural frequency of around 4Hz in the horizontal direction. Since those structures are designed in accordance with the IAEA seismic acceleration of 0.2g as a reference, a seismic isolation is required if earthquake-proof larger than 0.2g is necessary. Considering these conditions, analytical and experimental studies have been conducted to characterize the ITER dynamic response in Japan. This paper outlines the latest status on seismic design for ITER in Japan and evaluation on tokamak dynamic response and verification tests using scaled tokamak model.
